For over six decades, the people of Old Aba Division — united under the Aba State Movement — have championed a just and visionary cause: the creation of Aba State, a self-sustaining, industrially vibrant, and economically viable state that embodies the ingenuity, enterprise, and resilience of the Ukwa/Ngwa people.
Who We Are
Aba Union / Aba State Movement is a socio-cultural and developmental organization representing the people of the Old Aba Division — comprising nine local government areas: Aba North, Aba South, Osisioma Ngwa, Obingwa, Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East, and Ukwa West.
We are a unified voice of the Ukwa/Ngwa people, committed to advancing social justice, economic empowerment, and equitable representation through the long-standing call for the creation of Aba State — a cause rooted in history, equity, and the spirit of nation-building.
Our Historical Journey
The movement for the creation of Aba State dates back to 1954, when visionary leaders like Dr. Jaja Wachuku and Barr. Sunday Ubani Ukoma first championed the call for a separate administrative identity for the Old Aba Division.
Since then, this just and moral pursuit has been consistently presented before various National Assemblies, Constitutional Conferences, and State Creation Panels, including:
The Willink Minority Commission (1957)
The National Assembly (1983), which recommended a referendum for Aba State
The National Political Reform Conference (2005)
The National Conference (2014) under President Goodluck Jonathan
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Committee (2018) which endorsed Aba as the sixth state for the South East
